HID lamps especially High Pressure Sodium Vapour and Metal Halide lamps require a high voltage of around 4.5KV for striking. Since the supply voltage is only 240V, electronic ignitor is used to generate high voltage pulses to switch on the lamp. Once the lamp is on, the ignitor stops giving pulses. Superimposed ignitor produce the high voltage totally within the ignitor, isolating the ballast from high voltage. Hence at the end of lamp life, w hen the ignitor repeatedly tries to restart the lamp, no damage is done to the insulation of ballast. Superimposed ignitor is connected in series with ballast & lamp, and should be installed close to the lamp within a distance of 1 to 1.5M.
